Vivian Fernandez, MS, RD, CDE®, BC-ADM – President


Vivian Fernandez, MS, RD, CDE®, BC-ADM has been a Diabetes Specialist and CDE®for the last 27 years. She has a Master’s Degree and is currently starting her PhD at Loma LInda University. She has worked at the Joslin Center for Diabetes at Baptist Hospital in Miami as a specialist in Intensive Insulin Management. She was a Diabetes Program Director at Coral Gables Hospital in Miami, FL. She also has 17 years of pharmaceutical experience working with different diabetes companies such as Takeda and Bayer Pharmaceuticals. She is currently a medical liaison with Novo Nordisk. Her passion is the education of health care professionals on “state of the art” diabetes care for their patients with diabetes. She lives in Miami with her husband Carlos, a dentist, and is mother to 3 wonderful adult children, Lauren a labor lawyer, Katherine a “creative” at an advertising agency, and Daniel a mechanical/aero science engineer.


Joni Beck, PharmD, BC-ADM, CDE®– President-Elect


Joni is enthusiastic about working with multidisciplinary groups to create effective programs, care and education for diabetes management. Joni received her Bachelor’s and Doctorate degree in Pharmacy from the University of Minnesota prior to completing an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Accredited Specialty Practice Residency in Primary Care Pharmacy Practice from the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy and Oklahoma City Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. She received her national certification as a Certified Diabetes Educator®(CDE®) in 1996 and her Board Certification in Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM) in 2004.

Currently Joni is the Clinical Programs Director and an Associate Professor within the Department of Pediatrics, College of Medicine at the University of Oklahoma. She also holds an adjunct Associate Professor appointment at the University of Oklahoma, College of Pharmacy. Concurrent to local diabetes service, Joni serves on the American Diabetes Association National Diabetes Education Recognition Committee and has been an ADA ERP auditor since 2006. She participated in the Diabetes Self-Management Education Revision Workgroup leading to the new Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support standards published in 2012. From 2007 through 2009, Joni served as the Pharmacist CDE member of the National Certification Board of Diabetes Educators (NCBDE) Board of Directors. At the present time she serves as the Chair of the national task force for the Mentorship Program and is a CDE Mentor.

Karen Bolderman, RD, LDN, CDE®– Secretary/Treasurer


Karen has been a CDE®since 1988 and currently is the Manager of Diabetes Education at The Villages Health, The Villages, Florida. She coordinates diabetes education for The Villages Health healthcare system, including the Specialty Care Center and the six NCQA Recognized Patient Centered Medical Home primary care sites. Her past diabetes education experience includes positions as a diabetes and nutrition center manager, a clinical research study coordinator and educator in a large Baltimore endocrine practice, and diabetes clinical roles in the pharmaceutical and medical device industry. Additionally, she was a consultant dietitian for Camp Glyndon, Maryland’s camp for children with diabetes and a chief clinical and administrative director dietitian in several Maryland and New Jersey hospitals.

Karen is the author of numerous diabetes publications, including the American Diabetes Association (ADA) book Putting Your Patients on the Pump. She also co-wrote ADA’s Practical Carbohydrate Counting: A How-to-Teach Guide for Health Professionals and is coauthor of the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) White Paper: Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion (CSII).  Karen has been an active ADA volunteer and officer on national, regional, state and local levels, including the national ADA Board of Directors. She is a past Chair of the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE) and was also active in the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE), having served as Chair of the AADE 1991 Annual Meeting. She is a founding member and President of the Maryland Association of Diabetes Educators. Karen is a recipient of the Maryland Dietetic Association’s Maryland Recognized Dietitian of the Year award and is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Diabetes Care and Education (DCE) Practice Group. Through the years, Karen has presented extensively to both healthcare professional and consumer audiences on various diabetes- and nutrition-related topics.


Christine Day, RN, MS, BC-CNS, CDE®–Past President


Christine Day has been a CDE®since April 1987. She has been an educator and program coordinator of 3 ADA recognized programs – including the first program in Duluth, MN at St. Luke's Hospital and the first recognized program in a family medicine residency at the Duluth Family Medicine Residency Program. She continues to promote the CDE credential on the board of NCBDE and with students, diabetes professionals and patients locally and regionally as co-founder of The Northern Diabetes Educators Group– an education and networking effort in Northern Minnesota, Northern Wisconsin, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. She completed her BA in Nursing at the College of St Scholastica in Duluth, MN and her Master of Science at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
She is a clinical nurse specialist and CDE in Duluth, MN. She works in primary care to promote quality care and access for all persons affected by diabetes. Her life-long professional goal has been the promotion of quality care and education in a primary care setting.

She is a strong supporter of the CDE credential and the importance of quality diabetes care and education so that all persons affected by diabetes have improved access to the services and support offered by the certified diabetes educator. Through her work on the NCBDE board and as Treasurer of NCBDE and co-chair of the Outreach committee, she has worked to advocate for and promote the CDE credential. She also has been an auditor for the American Diabetes Association Education program since 1991 and sees the importance of collaboration between NCBDE and ADA. She has been supportive of the Academy since its inception and looks forward to continued efforts to support and promote the CDE as the standard of expertise in the education and care of people and families affected by diabetes.


Fran Cogen, MD, CDE®– Advisor


Dr. Fran Cogen, originally from New York, has resided in San Francisco, Chicago, and in the Washington DC area since 1996. She is dedicated to advocating for the needs of patients and their families in managing diabetes, and in 2007, she was named as one of the "Best Doctors in America." Dr. Cogen received her BS degree in The Biological Sciences from Cornell University in 1975 and her MD from The College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University in 1979. She completed her pediatric residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center ("Babies Hospital") from 1979-1982 and became a Certified Diabetes Educator in 1994. She has worked at The University of Chicago as the Outpatient Director of the Chicago Children's Diabetes Center and is currently the Director of the Childhood and Adolescent Diabetes Program at Children’s National Medical Center. She has served on the American Diabetes Association National Diabetes Education Recognition Committee and is currently the Physician Representative of The National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators. Additionally, Dr. Cogen teaches residents and medical students at Children's National Medical Center and The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Intensive insulin therapy and its effect on quality of life are her primary areas of interest. She has recently become the Director of the Washington Nationals Diabetes Care Complex which will provide a metabolic home for Diabetes and related metabolic disorders for patients in the Capitol area and beyond.


Susanna Robinson, RPh, CDE®– Director


Susanna Robinson is a Registered Pharmacist and Certified Diabetes Educator®who works in the Medical Affairs and Strategic Development Division at AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, Inc. As a Senior Regional Scientific Manager with AstraZeneca, she works in a non-promotional role to provide medical information, disease management consultation and resources to physicians and health care professionals in the area of endocrinology and metabolic diseases. Susanna is a past Chair and Board Member of the National Certification Board of Diabetes Educators. She is a former State and National Board Member for the American Diabetes Association. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Michigan Diabetes Partners in Action Coalition and is the past co-chairperson of their Training and Education Workgroup. Susanna has been a Pharmacist since 1990 and a Certified Diabetes Educator since 1994. Prior to joining AstraZeneca, she was a Senior Medical Science Liaison for Amylin Pharmaceuticals and prior to her career in industry she worked as an Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Specialist for St. Joseph Mercy Oakland in Pontiac, Michigan. While at St. Joseph Mercy, Susanna developed an Indigent Patient Prescription Program and established their Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Division. She was actively involved with educating patients with diabetes and other chronic disease states in addition to obtaining free medications from programs offered by pharmaceutical companies. She worked with medical faculty, medical residents and other health care professionals to develop and facilitate pharmaceutical care plans to enhance patient care and improve treatment outcomes. Susanna is also certified in anticoagulation therapy and provided patient management services for the Orthopedic and Pulmonary Physicians at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland and at the St. Joseph Mercy Anticoagulation Clinic. Susanna worked as an inpatient pharmacist and started an Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Division for Henry Ford Health System where she assisted physicians with patient care in the areas of Diabetes, Hypertension, Hyperlipidemia and Anticoagulation. She has served as an adjunct faculty for Wayne State University from 1991 to 2005.


Sue McLaughlin, MOL, BS, RD, CDE®- Advisor


Sue is the 2015 Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE), the national organization which beholds responsibilities for the recognition and advancement of the specialty practice of diabetes education in the United States.




Kathy O'Keeffe, MS, RD/LD, CDE®, CHWC - Administrator


Kathy has been a CDE®for 20 years, working in various settings hospitals, clinics, sales and private practice.She is a member of numerous professional organizations, such as the Academy of Certified Diabetes Educators, the American Diabetes Association, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the American Heart Association,Diabetes Care and Education, all with interests to improve the lives of those with diabetes.
